Tot Hill Farm isn't really near the others, unless you are going through the Asheboro area on the way there or back? About an hour from the Pinehurst area. Same designer as Tobacco Road. Mad...

Made the drive up to Warrior and was not disappointed. Fairways are very narrow, and with all the rain the rough was pretty thick. A good layout with a variety of holes. At least 3 of the par 5's are reachable in 2. Greens were in excellent shape, although speed was slow. Not sure if this was due to the rain or not. Very friendly staff. Nice yardage books in the carts which were a big help to a first timer. Took about 50 minutes to get there from Matthews, but I would make the drive again.

Played the front 9 at Emerald Lake. Haven't played here in a couple years and it is in a lot better shape than I remember. Their bunker project has been a success at least on the front 9. Sand was soft and consistent. Fairways were in good shape, greens rolled true and were quick. I know there have been concerns about the staff in the past, but I had no issues. Nice practice area. Looked like a lot of people were finishing up as I started, so an afternoon round may be the best choice.

Charlotte National Golf Club Date: 4/11/10 Sun Afternoon
Overall Rating: Great course

Charlotte National has a very good layout with a good mixture of holes. The fairways still need some warm temps to come in. The greens were about 90% healed from aeration, and they were cut so the speed has increased. They aren't the fastest in Charlotte, but consistent and roll smooth. Tee boxes were hit or miss, but the ball should be on a tee so why does it matter. Once we get consistent warm weather and some more rain the fairways should green up nicely. Staff is always friendly, and their short game practice area is one of the nicest around. Plenty of room to practice chipping/pitching, sand shots and their putting green is a great size.

This is arguably the newest course in the metro area. It opened last July and still has some maturing to do. It has a nice practice green and a driving range right beside the first tee. The front nine is unconventional in that it has 3 Par 3's, 3 Par 5's and 2 Par 4's. The greens are in good shape, but the fairways are still greening up, and will probably need another growing season to become fully mature. It is the type of course where you will lose a few strokes by not knowing the layout. If you are wild off the tee plan on losing some balls. Staff was friendly and we saw the rangers and cart girl multiple times on the front and back nine. It has a temporary clubhouse currently, and there are only a handful of holes that have any houses on them. It is worth the drive out to play and I will definitely play again. As long as they keep helping the course mature it will be a great place to play in coming years.
